The previous model was the Rutherford model, which had a nucleus (containing protons and neutrons) surrounded by orbitting electrons. It's sometimes called the "Solar System" or "Planetary" model. It was 3 dimensional.

Bohr's model kept the nucleus, and it was 3 dimensional, too.
He proposed that the electrons were not found at random distances from the nucleus, but that there were specific levels they had to orbit in.

The first level (closest to the nucleus) could hold only 2 electrons. The second level held 8, the third 8, and the fourth 18.
The electrons could not orbit between the levels, although they could move from one level to another, if there were energy changes in the atom.
