I think the main reason was to protect the oil supply at first, but the oil companies have made tens of billions of profit in the last couple years (each year) above what they made pre-Iraq. It was their ideology to allow Western corporations into the region and transform the oil production to western companies with the oil revenues going to Iraq and they in turn repaying the US for the cost of invasion, temporary occupation and upgrade of all facilities.....President Bush said as much in his speeches 2 years ago, but I haven't heard much about that lately because things are going so poorly in regards to infrastructure and the poor transition to a fully stable government (it's going to take a lot longer and cost a lot more)...In the meanwhile, the oil companies are making world record amounts of profit and are even being subsidized to the tune of tens of billions in tax exemptions and outright grants to develop facilities....The president is allowing these massive profits and at the same time, through a Republican led congress, have spent hundreds of billions in occupying Iraq....OF COURSE IT'S ABOUT OIL...but you'll give the best answer to pitiful answer who says "OF COURSE THEY CAN'T...ALL THEY CAN DO IT B#TCH AND MOAN AND COMPLAIN ABOUT BUSH AND NEVER HAVE A REAL ANSWER"...the answer is all around you my friend, you just won't see it when it is standing there in front of you

The number 1 answer is money! He is a Texas oil tycoon himself. Not to mention the VP. Both of them stand to reap an incredible fortune by the war. Yes, the VP is no longer employed there, but please don't let yourself think for even a moment that benefits will not be had. Bush owns oil. So his windfall is self explanatory.

Does anyone think for a moment that he has spent more money than all other US presidents in history COMBINED (yes, this is a fact, look it up!), just because he thought they should all of a sudden have democratic voting?

One other thing that I have also heard earlier this year was that Saddam had plans to & was in talks with OPEC to remove oil from the dollar standard. Much the way the dollar has been removed from the gold standard. Currently, to buy oil, any country must first convert thier currency to the US dollar. Then they can purchase the oil in dollars. That creates a nice demand for the greenback! If that were taken away, durring his presidency, that would have been more than catostrophic for both him & the US!

When ever you see something in politics, or anywhere else, for that matter, it pays to follow the money trail!

Trust me, I am no sheep of anyone. I actually voted for him once, but when I saw the corruption in his administration that he swore all over that he would rid the gov't of, I in good conscious could not do it again. Unlike many of Duh'byas sheep that will follow him no matter what he actually says or does? He said we were going to war based on his pictures he got from photoshop--I mean military inteligence. There was nothing found & he admits it. He didnt even try to make it look good and plant something or say they were looking in the wrong place! Yet all still follow? When called on it by Matt Lauer, his resopnse is "so what?"

The USA relies on oil to supply about 50% of its energy needs. Of this more then 55% is imported oil, (even in Texas where up until GW was govenor the used mostly domestic)
Unless Persian gulf oil can be kept under control our ability to remain a dominant world power would be a question.
Iraq has, according to BP the second largest oil reserves in the mideast.
Thats just the basics you want more????
BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAa
Saudia Arabia, Kuwait and UAE are the other big players
If you had read "The Project for the New American Century" whose authors are all now Bush advisors including Cheney, Rumsfeld, Perle ect ect ect
It is a very clear plan to carve out a strategic oil reservein the ME to garuntee Americas super power status
Go ahead you can read it!!!!
Given the USA's relations or problems with othe countries with oil reserves Iraq is the perfect place to carve
You want more? You dumb F
WOW NOTICE THE LACK OF BRAINS AND GUTS BY THE PERSON WHO ASKED THIS QUESTION
AFTER AN INSULT HE ASKS FOR THOUGHT OUT ANSWERS

I am not a sheep, but even that serial fantasist and Bush lover Bill O'Reilley openly admits that we are in Iraq for the Oil. although this is a vastly over-simplified rationale.

Actually, it is about dollar hegemony and regional politics. If you need to ask this, after all this time, then you will probably never understand.

To help you understand watch, the following video for free:

Do your own research, do not believe me or anyone, find out for yourself. have an independent mind. the mainstream media are about the worst source of info. they supported the Gvernment in allowing them to lie about the WMD in the first place. The media did not act as an honest broker of information, but a as a paid up propagandist, selling known lies as truth!

To all the( it is all about oil nuts,) would it not be considerably a lot cheaper if the democrats would allow this country to drill in Alaska, drill off our shores so we would not have to depend so much on middle east oil what is the reason there, and please don't say is because of oil spills everything has risk using that logic we would never go back into space after losing 2 shuttles.

This is a long article, there are a few out there. Its well cited. I don't know if the actual answer, but its getting warm.

Summary

Although completely suppressed in the U.S. media, the answer to the Iraq enigma is simple yet shocking - it an an oil CURRENCY war. The Real Reason for this upcoming war is this administration's goal of preventing further OPEC momentum towards the euro as an oil transaction currency standard. However, in order to pre-empt OPEC, they need to gain geo-strategic control of Iraq along with its 2nd largest proven oil reserves. This lengthy essay will discuss the macroeconomics of the "petro-dollar" and the unpublicized but real threat to U.S. economic hegemony from the euro as an alternative oil transaction currency.

It was not about oil right now, it was about securing oil supplies for the future so that we can stay globally dominant. You should read a book called "American Theocracy" It goes through and explains the downfall of each great civilization from the Dutch to the British and what caused them to lose their position as the worlds power. Global over reach being one of the reasons.

However answering this is any greater detail is pointless, because you obviously asked for yet another chance to mock the beliefs of another in attempt to validate yourself and your own feelings.
Carry on.

There isn't one.

You'll never get a strait answer from these sort of "call out" questions. It's better to just not take them seriously and make fun of them whenever possible.

since there is no clear reason for us invading Iraq, a number of people will assume it is about oil. they may be right. unfortunately, since this is the most secretive President in the history of the u.s., we will not know for a while.
