My computer will not allow me to play any sound. it says it does not have a sound device installed...although it is still on the computer. I have done all the toubleshooting tasks, searched the internet and still nothing. It is a Sigmatel audio device. I've tried updating it and rolling back, but nothing.

its a Sony Viao...and the hotkeys don't work either...

maybe you have to reconfigure you latop sound. Go to control panel and sound options and play with things around there and then get it t o work. But if that doesnt work use system restore.

In order to better help, we would need to know your operating system (Windows XP? Vista? Linux?). Also, when you said the computer "says it does not have a sound device installed," when does it tell you this? After you hit "Play" in Windows Media Player? Or when you try to adjust the Sound Properties in the Control Panel?

If you are running XP, make sure the sound device is ENABLED. If it is, you could try to disable it, reboot, and then enable the device. This has worked for me for various things (such as Internet connection being down..). To disable:
- Right click on My Computer, choose Properties
- Click on Hardware tab, click on Device Manager
- Click on "plus" sign next to Sound, Video, and Game Controller
- Open the properties for your Sound Device (Sigmatel?) by double-clicking on it.
- At the bottom of this window, change the Device Usage option. (If it is already disabled, you should enable it and try to play sound again -- it may have gotten disabled somehow...).

Hope this helps... More info on your system should be helpful for further troubleshooting.

Uninstall it and reinstall it. Right click my computer, properties, hardware devices, find the sound drivers - uninstall and then click scan for new hardware - and restart the computer.
