I believe that the use of marijuana for medical purposes should be legal. There are more accidents and deaths caused by alcohol than there are deaths or accidents cause by smoking marijuana, yet someone alcohol is legal. If marijuana can be used to help sick people deal with pain and discomfort then I say why not. Alcohol is abused in this country and really has no positive use, we know there is a positive use for marijuana yet we are not permitted to use it as such. I could debate this topic all day but I'll just leave it at that for now!

Marijuana was outlawed for two major reasons. The first was because "All Mexicans are crazy and marijuana is what makes them crazy." The second was the fear that heroin addiction would lead to the use of marijuana -- exactly the opposite of the modern "gateway" myth.
The modern explanation for the laws is the "gateway" myth -- the idea that marijuana leads to harder drugs. However, this argument is so patently ridiculous that even top government officials are coming to admit that it has no basis in fact.
You can find references for the above at http://druglibrary.org/schaffer/Library/mj_outlawed.htm and
http://druglibrary.org/schaffer/History/whiteb1.htm and
http://druglibrary.org/schaffer/library/gateway_myth.htm
Every major study of the drug laws in the last 100 years has concluded that there is no justification for any prohibition of marijuana for any purpose.
You can find the full text the major government commissions reports on the subject over the last 100 years at http://druglibrary.org/schaffer under Major Studies of Drugs and Drug Policy.

I think it could be beneficial to some, but would need to be HIGHLY regulated, since this country is full of scammers who will do anything to get drugs and/or turn a profit.
I believe that there are people out there who could benefit from it. I personally knew a man who had MS, as well as several other physical ailments. He had a very hard time eating, as he just never had an appetite. He would also get eye 'spasms'. You could look at him and watch his eyes twitch. He would smoke pot to make them stop doing that. And it really worked. The pot made the muscles relax.

I think using marijuana for purely medicinal purposes is good, but when it's used as an addictive drugs it's bad.

My opinion on this usage of a fairly mild drug is that if you are carefull with how you use it, and use it fairly mildly, it is true that marijuana has healing atributes. But on the other hand, it can kill you if you overdose, so you have to be careful.
