my father in law has a photo album full of old stamps and wants me to see if i can find out what they are worth. where do i start?

Try this website: http://www.virtualstampclub.com/inherit.html - it has very good advice. If the stamps have been stored in the kind of photo album (often called "magnetic") that has thin parallel lines of weak stickum to hold items in place, they may have been damaged so much that they are worthless, except possibly as postage. Those photo albums are very destructive. Photo paper is very dense and can resist the stuff, but it soaks right through stamps and other paper items, Ugh!

Easiest way is to go to a stamp-dealer - more than one for cross-checking.

Harder, but maybe more fun, would be to get stamp catalogues (local library?) and check them all yourself.
