I was thinking about buying a mac but I want to know if you can run one on a network that has a pc setup as the main network computer

Yes you can. OS X works great on TCP/IP networking. You don't need to mess with that AppleTalk stuff anymore.

In fact, I run a network that has three Mac's using strictly TCP/IP, and they can work with the Windows Active Directory. They see all the Windows based servers and printers no problem.

Yes, but if you want to communicate between the 2 you have to install the AppleTalk protocol on the Windows PC.

Sure you can.

You can use SAMBA on the MAC to connect to both Linux and Windows computers on the network.
