Your question is hard to answer as currently phrased. German isn't a population trend; it's a nationality.

If you're asking about sources of population growth in America in the late 1800s, then you're right about Germany being an important answer, along with Central Europe and Russia. A few decades earlier, it was Irish and Italians that made the news.

The plain fact is that many people arrived from many countries thoughout the 19th century, but a few gained special notice because of prejudices, old and new.

The Germans - among htem some of my ancestors - were feared as potential bad influences because of their cultural difference from many of the existing immigrants and offspring of immigrants in the country.
