It's never a great idea to drop out. Some states will not let you get your driver's license until age 18 if you didn't complete high school. Do you intend to get your G.E.D? ?School is only six hours a day, five days a week. How is it preventing you from reading up on becoming a video game designer? There are 138 other hours in the week. Even if, like most teens, you sleep 10 hours a day, you still have 98 hours left in your week. Surely you can find the time to plan for your career in all those hours and still have plenty of time to mess around with playing games, too. Right? It sounds like you need to speak to a career counselor and a guidance counselor. Lay out a good life plan, and that plan should allow for the fact the most people don't end up being what they first thought they would be. What if you decide to go another direction? Would you be completely blocked by the fact that you didn't finish school? What if you decided on a career that you had to have a college degree for? Why don't you look into an area college that will let you take some courses WHILE you are in high school, and that will let you get started? Why not see if there are any companies who would like a great, motivated, energetic "intern" who can help them online by giving a teen's perspective on their games, and then when you finish school, they will be a logical place for you to ask for a job? Try to call one of these game companies and ask to talk directly to someone who does the job you want to do. Ask them their advice on what you should do in order to get your dream job. I'll bet none of them will advise you drop out of school as a means of getting it. But, they will be the ones to best know how to get where you are hoping to go. Good luck.

Most won't even touch you without a high school diploma. Work on your math and computer courses as much as you can. You will need them if you want a career in video games. Try to get some time in a computer graphics course. Learn some programming languages if possible. What ever you do don't quit school. Rededicate yourself to doing the best you can so you can show them you really want this. Good luck and I'll be awaiting your first game.
I must add this little bit. Hey rob there are 7 days in a week not 4 it would leave 68 hours not 98

I dropped out of highschool for 2 motives ... i develop into BORED stupid (i develop into way too smart) and that i had a dysfunctional kin and that i ran faraway from abode. Please enable me allow you to recognize that i'm no longer 'uneducated' ... i do no longer have a severe college degree or a GED, yet I actually have a Bachelor's of technology, a carry close's of technology and a PhD in Psychology. I went to varsity in a state the position each person ought to flow to a state college in the adventure that they were over 21 at the same time as they utilized ... youngsters drop out of highschool for most diverse motives ... some are into gangs and doing drugs, some are bored, some get pregnant or could marry and help a pregnant lady, others do merely not care, some have dysfunctional households and may run away to live to inform the tale ...

Not a good choice. What's wrong with school? The drama, the b*tches? Whatever it is, it will eventually pass. Don't make a mistake you'll regret and cannot redress because of a temporary 'hate' for something. Everyone has potential and opportunity to exceed, don't pass that up. Many would wish for that opportunity but cannot have it.
Try looking into home-schooling or independenty studying programs that offer the option of a high school diploma if you truly cannot participate in a regular class.
Much luck to you.

Video game designers have to know A LOT of mathematics and computer science. They cannot do it without going to at least some sort of technical school.
If you cannot make it through high school, you won't be designing video games anytime soon.
A school that lets you in without a high school diploma is a scam. No one will recognize a diploma by such school.
My advice:
Stay in school. At least get your High School diploma out of the way. Then decide what you want to do. Also, if you're 16, you're pretty close to being a senior. You're almost done anyway. If you have invested about a decade in school, might as well see it to the end.

No. Dropping out is not, absolutely not the answer. Have you talked to your guidance counselor to get you into the right HS classes next semester? You'll need English, foreign language, arts, math, and comp sci at least. Can you debug a code right now?
I have several friends who have graduated from college to be designers, and they've been getting laid off. They would be on call on wacky hours of the day and night, sometimes up to 24 hours or more with no sleep. High burn-out rate. It's not just playing the games.
At least get yourself a well-rounded HS education, and then start your next level. You may be surprised that you may end up not liking it, and then where are you?
Take care, hon, and look out for number one...yourself.

Think about this. Why would a video game company hire a high school drop out? Finish high school, go to college, many colleges have computer animation degrees, all have computer degrees of other kinds if you're not interested in the graphics part. Work on games on your own time, but you won't get what you want by dropping out. I say again, why would a company hire a person who couldn't even commit to high school when they have applicants with bachelor's degrees?

You probably already know the answer should be not to drop out. Of course all of the answers here are telling you not to drop out if you want to further the dream of becoming a video designer, but also life is tough enough with your education let alone without one! My son dropped out his final year in HS because he thought he wanted to work and make more money than he could working part time and going to HS. Despite my begging him to stay with it, 2 weeks after dropping out he knew it was the worst mistake of his life and he had to go back to get some sort of education and training. He finished HS and went to Vo-Tech to become a EMT. Then after doing that for 6 years, he has gotten training to be a computer technician and is working as the head CT for one of the fastest growing cities in our state! He would absolutely tell you LOUDLY.....NEVER even consider dropping out! Also, yes, our state also does not allow you to have your drivers license at 16 if you drop out. You would have to be at least 18 to be able to test for it if you drop out of school. Stay with it, Honey! If for no other reason, to show everyone you did it!

You should stay in school...Video Game Design does take a college degree which you wont receive if you do not have a high school diploma. If the school atmosphere is the problem you may also look into getting your GED. Check with the local school dist. to find out more info. Good Luck
