I know I know it doesnt really run at that sped etc etrc etc. But is 5600 that fastest so far?

Yes, the AMD 64 X2 5600+ was just released over the past week or so.
It is currently the fastest desktop processor from AMD running at 2.8GHz x 2 processors.

If you are considering an AMD board please make sure it is socket AM2 as opposed to socket 939.
The AM2 socket will accept a quad4 processor upgrade once it becomes available.

nah its about equaling core duo now ... i have a 4400 clocked stable to 2.7ghz vs the 5600s' 2.8 so whoopdydoo ...

I do believe it is but next year they will be rolling out some new technology.
