Yeah the PIRA has esentially disbanded but there are splinter groups such as the Real IRA and the Continuity IRA who are still operating but nothing like at the intensity of the PIRA of old.
Having said all that there are people on the edges of Sinn Fein (taking them as the current leaders of the Republican movement) who are involved in serious criminal activity. There is always controversey as to whether these are official or not. Sinn Fein members are said to be involved in punishment killings in both Belfast and Dublin and some are involved in drug importing etc.
In honesty I would think that the serious criminal elements who were attracted to the IRA for that rather than the 'republican ideal' are pursuing their criminal activities that way.
It is also believed that they are involved in protection records and money laundering - not necessarily approved by Sinn Fein but as independent operators.

There are still protests and attacks but the attacks are more 'gang' like than politically minded. I also would like to say to the person with the vicar of dibley picture you are an ignorant twit to belive that though time has passed things have changed. You cannot just move on when england still controlls a section of its land when truely it was stolen from it. You have brought shame upon the image of Dawn French. Good question by the way, i would like say more but i have to dash off now.

PIRA have disarmed and decommissioned, all the soldiers have been ordered to stand down, there is no longer any military operation. All activities are now under the political control of Sinn Fein and they are seeking a peaceful way forward. Negotiations are going on with the DUP to re-establish the assembly.

The situation is that it is now up to everybody in Britain and Ireland to seek a way forward, so that all 5 Nations in these islands, can live together in freedom and peace. Working together, with our fellow members of the E.U. So now it is up to you the voters, to move the Governments forward.
