Classical music. Any music that's used for ballet performances is appropriate for dance classes, although you'll want to know the pieces well enough to know when an adagio is needed and when an allegro tempo is needed. Start off with some of the very well known composers;

Stravinsky
Tchaikovsky
Rimsky Korsakov

Anyone who wrote music meant for a ballet is a good bet for a ballet class. From there you can branch out into other classical music - Brahms, Handel, Beethoven, Mozart, Vivaldi, Schubert, Chopin.

You'll find that the "classical classicists" are best for barre excercises because of the mathmatical structure of their compositions which help students count easily and hear the beat without too much trouble. So Bach and Beethoven, for example, are wonderful for tendus and battements. Something with more emotion in it, like Rachmaninoff or Debussy, for example, is better for port de bras or center work.

You can also find "ballet class music" if you look in dance catalogs or on websites like discountdance.com and allaboutdance.com, dance4less.com, justforkix.com - they sell DVDs put together specifically for ballet classes.

anything with the right beat! classical music is gnerally best for the barre work, but i think you should use slow music that they hear, that way they're more likely to have fun, get to do different things, and they'll probably go home and practice too! i dson't suggest using classical music the whole way through, until they get older and appreciate ballet, and aren't just there beacuse they are told to.

I would try something thats not typically used in ballet such as an alternative rock song or a mellow rock song. Some you could use are Bed of Lies by Matchbox20 or Both Sides Now done by Judy Collins and Joni Mitchell.

my personal preferance is polina semionova's dance video song. it's german, but there's also an instrumental version. the instrumental version is great. it's not too modern neither is it too classical. it brings out the passion in a dance if you cheorograph it well enough. and plus it's a really nice piece of song.
