When it comes to science and deciphering a law, the average person is not too bright. Why not "require" law students serve on a jury. There are plenty of law students. Or make a profession out of it, that way when billy joe bob sues because his coffee was too cold, the professionals know better. The cost can just get tagged onto the lawyer fees.

True, our law says we must be judged by a jury of our peers. But some of our peers are not too bright. There are still people falling for the Nigera scam. Do you really want that person deciding your fate? I would want an educated person who isn't as gullable as I am deciding my outcome. And isn't the jury selected by the lawyers who are running the case? Why not have a pool of educated people they can pick from. It would make the selection process alot faster too.

It wouldn't work. A jury could then be bought. Much better to have a random pool of citizens who have no vested interest in the case. I know it's a cliche - the jury system is not perfect but it's th best we've got.

In the UK there was some talk of removing juries in white collar fraud cases and replacing them with a panel of judges but that idea never went anywhere (or did Tony Bliar change that too since, I've been away?)

In UK tax cases (civil, not criminal) there are, literally, one or two judges who hear the original case and they are specialists in tax law.

No, I think that's a bad idea. That would kind of defeat the purpose of "a jury of ones peers". Jury's need to be picked from the general population, at random, just like they are now. Professional Jurors? No.
