I have no friends in this foreign country where I am a PhD. I do have a boyfriend but that is going to end. I feel so lonely. If I start looking that I am satisfied with myself and that I do not especially need people's attention, will they approach me more? If I look lonely and sad, I guess they will just feel pity? I am a 27-year old girl btw...

If you're half-decent looking, people will approach you regardless. Depending on how you carry yourself, though, it will be different types of people.
Either way, its really hard to fake being self-confident.
Seeing as you're a PhD, at least you've got the intelligence thing goin for ya.

The last thing people want to see is someone feeling sorry for themselves. People like confidence and approachability. Try behaving confident and friendly, as much as it fits your personality. Acting like you don't need people may come off as aloof or arrogant, so still try acting like you like making friends and meeting new people.
