most of the time when a movie is released earlier inthe week its because it has the potential to be a blockbuster and the movie production companys want to squeeze all of the money flow out of a movie they can by opeing it in the middle of the week when there is no other competition.

It's the studio's discretion when they choose to release a film as well as theatres' availability. A potential sleeper hit and strong character vehicle (any non-special effects vehicle) may opt to be released on Wednesday to be able to coast into the weekend with strong sales and not get bumped out by a "blockbuster" or big-star film, which would get released on Friday.

If it's a holiday weekend....like this week, I'm sure the new movies are coming out on the 20th.
