I'm on vacation this week. My co worker just called to see if I could cut it short and come back tomorrow because she's sick. Normally I wouldn't mind but it's like she has this thing about staying out of work all the time. I'm hardlyever out but she leaves early almost every day and once I took a 3 day off for a family funeral and "paid" for it dearly by her leaving early every day the rest of the week. It's like she's in this unsaid game where whoever stays out of work the most wins. We share responsibilities for running our office and one of us has to be there every day. Our boss said we have to work this out amongst ourselves. Her vacation is next week and she's going out of town. I feel she's just trying to ruin my vacation. Am I wrong? She did sound like she had a stuffy nose but I'm kinda weary. She also has 8 years senority on me so she has like 3 times the vacation time I do and her leaving early all the time does not count against it. Suggestions?

When you're on vacation, you're on vacation. That means no job entanglements. Next time she calls, don't answer the phone. If she asks later, tell her that you were on vacation and busy with your friends/family running errands. That's what I do when I want to make sure that I have a day off. You can't get in trouble because you weren't supposed to be at work anyway.

I wouldn't give up the vacation! I would just say that I had plans that I couldn't cancel for the week. Tell her you were leaving town, or out of town.
If it's only a stuffy nose or a cold, she can work through that! Lots of people do it every day for goodness sake.
It doesn't sound like she would reciprocate the gesture anyway. I'd call a private meeting with your boss and explain how rediculous it's become. I'm sure they don't want to pay for someone to be there when they are in fact going home early all the time. Perhaps they could make a new policy that habitually leaving early or coming in late would count against the vacation time.

I agree with the above answers (at least the 3 that are there as I'm answering). Don't do it. Tell her you "tried to re-arrange your plans, but are finding it's impossible to do at this short notice." Maybe make up something about people coming from out of town. It IS Christmas after all. You don't have to tell her specific plans, your vacation is your business alone. I don't think she's actually mean spirited enough to really try to ruin your vacation, but I do think she is trying to get extra time off.

If she has a history of it, then don't even think about it. Tell her that you are sorry, but there is no way to cut your vacation short.

I also think your supervisor should be made very aware that she constantly leaves early.

Seniority does not make you immune to the rules. Make sure your boss knows what's really going on, and tell her that you can't just drop everything to come in - you're on your well earned, well /planned/ vacation.

Tell her you have plans. Tell her you are sorry that she doesn't feel well, but you can't cancel your plans to come in. I can't believe she even asked you to cut your vacation short since hers is next week!!!!! It seems more likely to me that she wants to leave early for her vacation!!! I also can't believe your boss doesn't see that! Besides, at most companies you have to work the day before and day after your vacation to actually get your vacay pay, so what about that?

I'm with the other others: Don't go in. If you are like me, it pains you somewhat to say no, but it also sounds like you are getting sick of taking advantage of you. She will only continue to do so if you do not end it now. She should be understanding, with the holidays looming, that you need this time off. If she doesn't understand, that is her problem. You deserve a real vacation.

The work will always be there no matter how many times you leave or how many times you cut your vacation short.

Tell the boss you are on vacation and can't return.

By ALL means, keep your plans. She is going to continue to do this. So what if she has the sniffles!! Its a cold, she'll live, and if she's still sick next week, then she can get better when she goes on her vacation. Enjoy your time off, because you'll regret it if you dont.

Let her know it would be impossible for you to end your vacation early. She just wants extra time off. Her supervisor needs to put a stop the that sh*t. She is just riding the hard work of others.

If she's well enough to call you herself, she's not that sick. And how can she predict how sick she will be tomorrow? It's only Tuesday! What a jerk.

Dont do it!!! Or if you feel bad and want to do it.. I would only work 1 day for her! You have earned your vacation. Don't be a pushover. Let her find someone else! Enjoy yourself and don't worry about it! Tell her that you had plans and that you could maybe go in for one day. Tell her your family is coming in or you're going on a couple day vaca.
