It was originally Green from St Nicholas in Holland. He was a rich person who sprinkled coins down the chimneys of the poor people. Then thanks to the marketing of Coca Cola his suit became the red off coke. Santa Claus comes from Saint Nicholas (in dutch it sounds a bit like Santa Claus).

In the 1840's, the farm gnome in Nordic folklore started to deliver the Christmas presents in Denmark, but was then called the "Julenisse", dressed in gray clothes and a red hat.

For example, in Washington Irving's History of New York, Sinterklaas was Americanized into "Santa Claus" but lost his bishop's apparel, and was at first pictured as a thick-bellied Dutch sailor with a pipe in a green winter coat.

Santa Claus later appeared in various colored costumes as he gradually became amalgamated with the figure of Father Christmas, but red soon became popular after he appeared wearing such on an 1885 Christmas card.

Images of Santa Claus were further cemented through Haddon Sundblom's depiction of him for The Coca-Cola Company's Christmas advertising. The popularity of the image spawned urban legends that Santa Claus was in fact invented by Coca-Cola or that Santa wears red and white because those are the Coca-Cola colors. Both claims are false.

Many years ago, Coke a cola was a big seller during the summer months but not during the colder months. So Coke a Cola took Santa, dressed him in red and white and had him drink Coke during the winter. The advertisement campaign worked and Coke started selling much better year round. Santa has been dressed in red and white every since.

I believe Saint Nicholas (Santa Claus), who was kind to poor children, wore a green robe with white fur. This was later changed to red by the coca-cola chaps to suit there purposes and it just stuck.

Santa Claus is traditionally represented in a red cloak with white fur trimmings.
Its a reference to 'St Nicholas', who reputably performed his charitable acts dressed in his red bishop's robes.
