I don't know but I do know that the ORIGINAL song was written back when the Christians were being persecuted. Everything in the song refers to something that the Church stands for. The true love is God, the 'me' is any Christian, the Partridge in a Pear Tree is Christ, etc. The four calling birds stood for the Gospels; Matt., Mark, Luke, John.

The song is totally allegorical, or so the story goes. I would say that a calling bird is any bird that sings, which includes most of them.

The popular notion is that the song was penned by Catholics to teach children the important parts of the Christian faith. This may be a myth... Check this out and decide for yourself:

Yes! That is an Americanization of the English Colly bird or a type of blackbird!

Hi Tammi,

I'm not sure, but the long distance bills were probably out of sight.

You and your Daughter have a very Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year,

Darryl S.
