Sudoku, framed pictures of family & friends. When my dad was in the hospital we brought him a small TV so he could keep up with his favorite shows & sports.

There are some inexpensive electronic games that are fun. We got my step dad a hand held poker game when he was in the hospital. It was fun and we took turns passing it around. Some snacks are great too. Maybe small bags of chips, candy or other goodies that won't need to be refridgerated. Also a tote bag would be nice. Some places will engrave for free or have pretty scenes on them. Check out Lillianvernon.com for some personalized ideas. I did a lot of my holiday shopping online with them. Good luck and Merry Christmas. Hope some of my ideas are helpful.

I think gourmet teas and coffees would be great. The hospital would provide hot water for those things. Books for her to read that are inspirational. Magazines of interests that she likes. Maybe recipes. Something that she can look forward to after getting out of the hospital. Could be gardening. Just anything she really likes. A personal care package with brush or combs or lotions. No perfumes. These can be quiet expensive but also not costly at all. Is fun being creative. No aerosol cans . Be sure you check in at the nurses station to assure the items you have are safe to give. Is necessary for everyone's safety. Merry Christmas. How thoughtful of you to do for them. That is great.

Maybe you could get together some cash for the husband, he will be traveling alot back and forth, and he will also need to eat while he is there. Maybe a phone card for those longdistance calls that either may want to make. You could also offer to stay a night or two (if permitted) with the wife, so her husband can rest. It doesnt always need to be a purchased gift. I sure would have appreciated a nice clean house to come home too when I was discharged from the hospital.

How about a basket ( or travel bag) with different types of travel size toiletries: shampoo, conditioner, powder, etc. I know when your in the hospital you like to have your own bag of things. Even a blanket if he stays overnight in the hospital. For some movie time fun how about: A basket with a gift certificate to blockbusters, popcorn, soda, maybe some candy. DVD's Hand held computer game Hope your friends wife will be o.k.

Great ideas. How about a little writing kit: a basket with a pen, some stamps, some address lables, and some thank you or blank note cards, some assorted other cards, such as birthday. They will undoutedly need to thank people and acknowledge birthdays, etc., and will have a hard time getting to the store or post office. How about a little travel snack kit with things in pouches that can be added to hot water to make a good, quick drink or meal? She may like one of those nice silky things that slips over your eyes while you sleep, because it's often hard to get to sleep in the hospital because of the lights. She may like a little bedside "freshen up" kit with a tiny mirror, comb, chapstick, facial wipes, tiny lotion, etc. He may like a nice masculine tote bag because he will undoubtedly have to carry more things than he is used to as he goes back and forth between hospital and home. Most men usually rely on women to haul the stuff they would need in their purse.

It sounds wonderful what you are doing, but wouldn't you want to get them things for when she is not in the hospital so she doesn't have to be reminded that she is ill?
Some suggestions, making them nice dinners, if they have children, offer to babysit so they can get some rest, offer to clean their home once in a while.

People always need the fleece blankets its cold in there and those blankets are ruff and they are not home and some nice smelling lotions if they allow them. Keep her in the mind of home and her spirit will stay high also a CD player with soft sounds to help take her mind off of the sound of where she is. I hope this helps
