Unfortunately, it really does matter what kind of job you're looking for. If you want to get into the creative end of it (barring editing), you can be any where, but you have to hustle to get your stuff seen. If you're more interested in editing or the production side, then for Marvel or DC, you need to be in NYC.
However, since you're already in San Diego, Wildstorm is located in La Holla.
Unless you have specific skills that you can offer the company to get employment, and depending on your age, you may want to consider interning. Either check the Time/Warner website for job openings, or go to the big convention and see what's what.
The advantage to interning is that if the company is used to interns, you tend to fade into the background. That means that you'll have the opportunity to observe how the company operates without much trouble. A lot of it is busy work, stapling, emailing, filing, scanning, etc. but it really is an easy way to get to know people in the industry directly. And provided that you have enough of a work ethic, they will see you as an asset, putting you at the top of the list for possible employment! If you're an artist, you'll also have the opportunity to show your stuff around ONCE YOU'VE MADE FRIENDS. Don't go in anticipating that ANYONE wants to see your stuff, but once you've made friends, you can show your stuff around. And show it to everyone interested. Chances are, even if they're not in a position to hire you, they'll give you realistic feedback. Most people that work at a comic company are fans, so they're your audience.
Good luck!
