Do you mean the thirteen colonies of America? Well they wanted their independence from the outrageous taxes being imposed upon them by England. That's where the phrase, "No taxation without representation" comes from.

The first colonies in America were established by people fleeing religious intolerance....England was actually glad to have them gone becaue they represented a group of people unlikely to ever conform. After, when England was made poor by its wars, and the american colonies were thriving, England saw a way to recoup thier financial losses by taxing the colonies....also, England "owning" the colonies had the right to govern them as they saw fit. The colonists, having grown accustomed to being independant from major interference from England, and achieving what they had without benefit of much help from England, resented the taxation England thrust upon them, and desired to be truly free of England, its King and its government.
