If you drive from London to Harwich ( approx 2 hours) get on a Stena Line boat ( journey time will be just over 6 hours as of January) then drive from Hoek van Holland to Amsterdam ( approx 60 mins) that should get you there.
Can also go London-Dover-Calais-Amsterdam which would involve an hour or so on the boat and about 7 hours driving.
Good luck

Oh and whoever said it takes over 5 hours to fly are very silly children. Gatwick or Heathrow to Amsterdam Schipol is less than an hour, as is Stansted to Schipol.

DUH, London is in england, and england is an island. You won't be driving across the water, you can take the train, or a flight. Not to mention They drive on a differnt side of teh road in London then in Amsterdam.
Amsterdam is NOT a car friendly city. Unless you like parallel parking with an inch to spare, next to a channel with a two inch curb, I wouldn't recomend it.
Do like the locals do, ride a bike! A car is a hinderence in Amsterdam.
