We wanted to make a cd with one or two songs from a variety of my own (purchased) cds and give it to my daughter's friends as a party favor. We're trying to teach our children to live with a pretty high ethical standard and she asked me if this isn't stealing. What do you think? I figure if I only do a song or two, it might introduce someone to new music and they might buy a cd they otherwise wouldn't. But am I fooling myself? Am I stealing intellectual property?

A sample mixed cd is OK, but burning an entire album onto one cd is theft. If you purchased the cds, it sounds ethical to me. People make samplings all the time for weddings, parties, etc.

I say its okay. your are showing the younger generation your era of music which can lead them to be more opened minded with things.
if you make a CD that is a whole album that recently came out...than thats wrong.
if you make a CD of music that you listened to growing up or a few songs remind you of your young ones or songs that define a generation.. thats fine.

I didnt know who the Beach Boys, Bread, The Turtles, the band that played "Inagodda Davida", etc... were until my uncle cracked out his psychodelic record box that had 45's from when he 19/20 yrs old (when he showed me, he was 50).. i think another group was teawana brass band or something like that... all kinds of old stuff.. anyways.. im 25 & would much rather listen to oldies than "I'ma pop a cap in yur azz, fool" music any day.

i say DO IT! show them what "good" music is.

One cd would be ok but making copies for everyone at a party.....? That's a different story. If you're trying to set a high ethical standard for your kids then it's probably not a good idea.

I think if it's a mixtape that doesn't have every single song off an album, it's ok. People post 1 or 2 songs of an artist all the time on their music blogs to introduce others to new sounds. I think it's great.

Besides, you're not selling it. Now that's unethical.

Consider it offsite storage! You are just backing up YOUR cd's and keeping them offiste for safe keeping!

Not unethical but it's tacky and illegal which is much worse. You're convincing your self cause it sounds ridiculous to you too.

It is not ethical.
