Do you mean 'The Beiderbeck Affair'?
It starred James Bolan as Trevor Chaplin - a woodwork teacher trying to get hold of some Bix Beiderbeck records... and some odd transactions in a shed.... which leads to the discovery - and conviction of a bent copper???
In series two (The Beiderbeck Tapes) it was about nuclear waste dumping in the Yorkshire Dales; and series three was a mysterious person trying to get asylum in Yorkshire...

I would say No Place like Home but that was a light comedy - not a drama and it trevor was the neighbour rather than the central charecter.
