This country is doing pretty well, but I am afraid that if we get a Democrat elected for President in 2008, we will flee from the Middle East and leave ourselves open to further terrorist attacks.

For the safety of our nation, I would like to ask my congressman to propose an amendment to the constitution allowing a President to run for more than 2 terms. I know this used to not be a law, but it needs to change, and fast.

How hard would it be to get a constitutional amendment on ANYTHING passed?

George W. has kept us safe for 5 years, I say we let him continue until 2012.

FOUR MORE YEARS! FOUR MORE YEARS!

Sounds great and all but what happens when a Dem get's there. Then we're stuck.
It's too easy for politicians to stack the deck and get re-elected each time.

I'm not surprised you asked this question as I think that if the Republicans would have swept the midterm elections that we would be seeing a move to try this so that George W. Bush could continue taking this country into the abyss. He had been the worst President in modern history and maybe all time. After 9/11 he became godlike in the eyes of many despite the fact that the warnings of what was coming were ignored. If you think that he has kept you safe then you've been only watching your local news. Try reading the news from sources around the world - its pretty eye opening. He has exposed us to more danger than you can image. Do you realize that he has spent more money that all previous presidents combined! And what have we gotten for our money? We're mixed up in 2 wars that we can't win. We also have a war against terror. That's like a war against farting. If you want a war we should call it what it is - a war against Islamic Fundementalists. The military is bankrupting the country. The dollar is collapsing. The Chinese have over a trillion dollars in our debt instruments. If they dump then we are in for some major hyperinflation. We are their hostages and what do we do - send top administration officials over there to boss them around. The value of their holdings have eroded by $300 billion dollars in the last 3 years alone - they are not going to stand by much longer. Make no mistake we are in trouble. The stock market goes up and nobody can figure out why. The govt has stopped publishing important reports that follow inflation of the currency. Even the Chinese are asking why. Since the inception of the Federal Reserve System - politicians have manipulated the currency to the extent that it has now lost close to 98% of its value since 1913 (when it was created). There is trouble afoot and there is no great statesman minding the store just a puppet for Karl Rove. I'm no liberal either. I've just been following things carefully and with an open eye. Geo Bush will get this country out of debt by inflating the currency. A gallon of milk will be $10 but his friends will be insulated. Have you noticed how many people from Goldman Sachs are not govt financial big shots and how Goldman also made record profits with a record number of individuals getting $25 million bonuses. Think about. Another term for Bush. He'll incinerate us for sure. As to your question - even if it did pass - it would be unlikely that he would be eligible anyway as it would smack of pure imperialism or dictatorialism. This country needs to wake up and shake the cobwebs out from both parties and demand some real govt not a father or mother figure watching over her children.

With the Democratic Congress taking office next month, the chance of such an amendment getting passed by Congress, let alone 3/4 of state legislatures (a majority of which are also Democratic), by the 2008 election is very, very close to zero.

hm. i think it's a horrible idea, not only for bush but for any president to serve more than two terms. in the current political climate it would be nearly impossible because:

Article Five describes the process necessary to amend the Constitution. It establishes two methods of proposing amendments: by Congress or by a national convention requested by the states. Under the first method, Congress can propose an amendment by a two-thirds vote (of a quorum, not necessarily of the entire body) of the Senate and of the House of Representatives. Under the second method, two-thirds (2/3) of the state legislatures may convene and "apply" to Congress to hold a national convention, whereupon Congress must call such a convention for the purpose of considering amendments. As of mid-2006, only the first method (proposal by Congress) has been used.

Once proposed—whether submitted by Congress or by a national convention—amendments must then be ratified by three-fourths (3/4) of the states to take effect. Article Five gives Congress the option of requiring ratification by state legislatures or by special conventions assembled in the states. The convention method of ratification has been used only once (to approve the 21st Amendment). Article Five currently places only one limitation on the amending power—that no amendment can deprive a state of its equal representation in the Senate without that state's consent.

No part of the constitution forbids the President from a third term; in fact, FDR held the office for three. The idea of this first "term Limit" began with Washington though, and its a pretty good way of keeping the government responsive to the people.

NO ONE in their right mind is going to go for this!

We'da still had White Trash Billy on 9/11 if three terms had been deemed a good idea. Eight years is enough and, besides, those boys look pretty worn out after doing that job 24/7 for that long!

The sad part is that there are people like you out there that actually think they are Americans.
