I say Picard took more of a diplomatic approach while Kirk was more military "lets go kick their asss".Close call. They were both great!

Kirk pushed the ship more, which made is exciting, but if I had to be on bored the Enterprise to work I would want Picard to be my captain. Would feel safer

Apples and Oranges. Different approaches to command. I would say that Kirk was a better captain due to the fact that he had to overcome many obstacles without the technological advantages that Picard had. Although Picard had to deal with a wider variety of enemies.
