I bet the rest of the world would support the separation. I would imagine that Russia (the former Soviet Union strong arm) and China with its problems over Korea and Taiwan, and the Middle East with tensions over land disputes would welcome the CSA as a member of the UN. However, I don't think the CSA would be stupid enough to join the UN, to much talk and not enough action.

Don't forget that the US space program, CDC, and many of Americas favorite things such as Jack Daniels, Coke, Pepsi, and most every type of music started in the south.

The south has risen and we are not taking applications!

Texas had some vague standing about leaving the United States when it joined as a free republic in 1845. This was made moot after the Civil War when ALL southern states had to petition and be approved by Congress. Texas itself backed in on March 30, 1870.In other words it might make a good short story but just cant happen.

Happened once already and they had a big spat over it. Not likely to happen again but if it did you can expect an even bigger spat now that we have nukes.

A more likely scenario would be illegal Mexicans taking over California, New Mexico, Arizona, and Texas and trying to join up with Mexico. The spat then would be decisive and not at all pretty. the battle cry would be "Remember the Alamo!" Mexico would be sent back to the days of the Aztecs.

I am from the south. Georgia, in fact. I wish we could leave the union, for several reasons, but mostly to get away from all you dam*n yankees. Then you won't come down here and vacation all the blessed time, and ask us what cotton trees look like!
(Cotton grows on a stalk, by the way.)
