I can see rock climbing as being somewhat fun, but what's the lure of leaving your family and warm home to go into the harsh elements. I was very sad fo rthe climber who died and I hope they find the two alive, but they've put a lot of rescuer's lives at risk too. What's the attraction? Why in the dead of winter?

you know what. i'm with you, i feel the pain of the dead hiker. BUT you have to understand, everyone has their own opinion. many people have spoke on CNN about an andrenaline rush, or whatever. mountain climbing is an extreme sport. these climbers were exteremists.

some people might not know or believe it, but to them this was a challenge that would make them stronger people. it is what drove them to contain a stronger belief in themself and in eachother. it was a lifelong experience that would make them stronger, like i said, individually and together.

some people drive on that feeling, and also the nature of it is something else climbers often fall in love with. we wouldnt know (non-climbers) why some extreme climbers do what they do.

but more importantly, they know why. so we shouldnt even ask why...no more "why did they do this." they did this because to them it was a way of life, and the world needs more people like that.

Its a call of the wilderness, a challenge to endurance, fortitude and will.

ANother way of looking at it is that it is a sport, another area to develop skills at. Ice climbing is not new, has been practiced in Europe where there are many experts in the field.

It is called winter skills, winter mountaineering. These same people building up their skills to master the difficult environment are the same ones who eventually become experts and rescuers, who either end up teaching survival skills or become part of their elite group.

I don't get it either! So much can go wrong, even if you are experienced and prepared, like these guys were.

Very sad...I thought for sure they would all be found alive.
