An important thing to keep in mind, regardless of which anti-virus, anti-malware, anti-spyware and firewall you use
( http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/default.mspx ) is to keep it UPDATED, just as it is important to make sure you have all windows critical and security updates +
http://update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us
Note: The way I have mine set is to only notify me that updates are availiable, but to not download them automaticaly. Then I can check to be sure I get just the ones I want. I then click on "custom", and after the updates have been downloaded I look them over to see which ones I want, then disconnect from the net, disable firewall and anti-virus program, and then install the updates, and then re-enable the firewall and anti-virus programs before reconnecting to the net.

Are you sure your computer is infected with a virus? Reboot your computer and enter safe mode by pressing the F8 key. There are several safe mode options, choose log on with last working configuration. See if this solves the problem. If it does not, reboot your computer and enter in to safe mode again. However, this time choose safe mode with network. Log on and use Windows system restore to return your computer to a previous state before the problems appeared. If this should fail, reboot and enter safe mode with network again. Log on and use whatever antivirus program you have and scan your computer. Be sure to quarantine any suspicious files. If you do not have an antivirus program installed, connect to the Internet. Once on the Internet, go to Trend Micro's Housecall webpage http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
Use Housecall to scan your computer for viruses and spyware. Housecall will remove any malicious files. There are other online virus scanners besides Housecall; however, they usually only scan for free and require you to pay for removing then. After removing any malicious files, reboot and see if this solves the problem. If it does not, you should seriously consider reinstall Windows. Don't panic. You can safely reinstall or repair Windows without destroying any of your data. Read:
" Langa Letter: XP's No-Reformat, Nondestructive Total-Rebuild Option
Fred Langa shows you how to completely rebuild, repair, or refresh an existing XP installation without losing data, and without having to reinstall user software, reformat, or otherwise destructively alter the setup. I can give you a link that deals with hard drive problems.
Some drive problems can be easily fixed by yourself using easily available tools. I found the info at http://fixit.in useful. Try this site, if you can get what is required.
