The Confederates fired on Ft. Sumter which began the Civil War. Lincoln was committed to saving the Union and said, "United we stand; divided we fall." He realized that we would be two weak nations if split and wide open to attack from Britain who would have loved to have her "colonies" back and from other countries such as Spain who was expanding its influence in the West and in South America. So, Lincoln went to war with the Confederacy.

Chow!!

If I remember my history correctly, Confederate troops fired the first shotsof the Civil War at Union troops at Fort Sumpter. By the time the first shots were fired several southern states had seceded from the United states and formed the Confederate States of America. President Lincoln declared war only after union troops had been attacked by Confederate troops.

Lincoln declared war first by calling up volunteers to invade the south. However the first shots were fired by confederate troops when Colonel Anderson refused to evacuate Fort Sumter voluntarily.

He didn't. Lincoln forced the Southerners to fire the first shots by sending a resupply ship to Fort Sumter, which he knew they wouldn't let pass.

Actually, John, this is sort of a vague question.

Which attack are you speaking of? The Civil War lasted a long time, almost exactly four years.

jeez you make it sound like the southerners were a peace loving group. WRONG! they brought the war upon themselves by declaring war on the union. And rightfully so the rebellion was squashed
