Southern people talk funny too. But the majority of the US don't have such an intense accent as the east coast and southern people. Why is it? Some Americans relish in talking with a thick accent. I am from the midwest and have no discernible accent or so I've been told from all types of people.

Maybe larger populations of immigrants made for diff. accents like a typical Boston accent because of the Irish or North Datoka because of the Skandinavians, then NYC, the Italian Spanish mix not to forget Yonkers where I think a lot of European Jews descended on makes up for the distinct accent.

The west was made from ALL these groups which is why the accents get blander the younger the territory.

Just a guess though.

BTW, the only people who have NO ACCENT are people who cannot speak. I hate when Americans say they have no accent. If you have a voice you have an accent!!!!!

I'm from the south and I don't have an accent. I travel frequently and everyone comments that they can't tell I'm from the south. I don't think people from the east coast "talk funny" either. At least they don't make that disgusting grating noise that many people from WI have. Just an observation

As mass media reaches out to more and more of the country, and saturates us with more "homogenized" accentless news-speak, there will be fewer and fewer regional dialects. So you can expect all dialects to disappear in the US within the next century or so.

That having been said, no one dialect is "funny" or "wrong" when compared to the others. They are just how you were taught to speak by your family and where you grew up.

When I first started losing my New England accent, people started asking me if I came from England. :o)

So you have a midwestern accent as well, unless you have taken steps to "homogenize." Trust me, from someone who has studied dialects, you DO have a discernable accent - just not to your friends.

Ahh, haven't you seen the movie Fargo? All areas of the U.S. have different accents and different words even. People in Wisconsin said I had a southern accent and I live in northern Indiana! We all have funny accents! I am sure you have an accent! The people in Boston think you have one!

it is rather a sweeping generalisation. that is a properly time-honored undeniable truth that the optimal concentration of the non secular in u . s . of america is contained in the interior states, with more beneficial human beings contained in the coastal states being prone in the route of atheism. it is assumed to be because those contained in the coastal states have more beneficial publicity to different cultures by skill of human beings getting into and in a overseas usa.
