Seriously... so many hypocrites. Everywhere people whine about global warming and the impending gas crisis (which I think are very real), yet they keep buying those ugly, expensive, innefficient, polluting SUVs.
Come on, if you don't do off-road exploring in wild areas, and just stay in the city, what's the point? Your family is not that large, you can easily fit into a minivan, or a nice, fast sedan car.
But no, you'd rather have your wife (a socialite with way too much time on her hands), drive at 10 mph, blocking the road with that f*cking huge ugly shoebox on wheels, and making me late for work, right?
SUVs are expensive, ugly, unsafe, pollute unnecesarily, and are almost always driven by spoiled hags that go slowly because they have way too much free time on their hands.
Man, sometimes I really hate people.

Because a 118 pound woman riding by her self that can't drive, putting on lipstick late for work talking on her cell phone needs all the intimidation factor she can get!

Despite the fact that both my mother and mother-in-law drive SUVs, I generally agree with you. I live in a mountainous area, and think SUVs have serve a purpose if you are going camping, hauling a boat, etc., but too many people use them strictly as road cars.
In defense of those with large families, many mini vans do not get the best gas mileage, and I would hate to drive a mini van. But if you don't have a large family, or don't spend much time off road, there is no good reason to drive an SUV other than to impress the neighbors.

Take some DEEEP breaths! You're gonna have a stroke! Yes, most of what you said is true about SUV's, but the way people drive now? When my kid gets his license, he's GOING to be driving our Mountaineer, not some junky Subaru that can't "take a punch"!
No, we're not socialites or hags (We're LIBERAL DEMOCRATS) and we DO care about the environment, and if we had the $ (which we do NOT, thanks to Shrubbie & his oil pals...wanna get mad at someone for wrecking the environment? Try THEM!), we WOULD get a hybrid vehicle.
BTW, since you say people "whine" about global warming...I assume you think they're wrong? If so, then what do YOU care what they drive? What...did someone hit you with an SUV?
I really hate people TOO...MOST of the time...but I also try to be realistic! If you're so dead set against SUV's, then join some environmental groups to lobby Congress to ENFORCE, nevermind, pass the Clean Air Act!
Do something useful...because, now YOU are the one who's whining!
Hey...I'll sell you my SUV at a bargain price! Whaddya say? lol

Why the SUV? Because then you have to have a giant garage. Which means you need a giant house. Which means you need to live on a larger lot. Which means you can't live very close to work. Which means you need to commute everywhere. Which means you can't rely on public transit. Which means you need a car.
And you think that somehow having a big car will keep you safe. Especially from all of the riff-raff who don't live like you.

I asked that question to some SUV owner. They told me about the space they need (I have a dog!) and all that bull... but at the end only 2 reasons they gave me make some sense.
The first one: I like the look of it (and how i look in it)
the second one: I feel safer (i know they are wrong but I can understand the feeling)

I think it's funny that the adverts always are about people getting away into nature when most people who buy them consider a mere water puddle an "off road" experience.

Haha, its not hypocrisy when the people who buy the SUV's ARENT the ones complaining about Global Warming, it is the hybrid driving, leer jet flying, granola eating hollywood types that are beotching about Global Warming. Not your average joe in his truck that he uses for work.
