So the real question is, why do Americans call football, football when it clearly isn't?

The word soccer came from the word Assoc which was an abbreviation of the word association football. The word came from England. New Zealand also calls it soccer. The first "college football" game between Rutgers and Princeton was actually a soccer game and that game evolved to what we call football today in this country and somewhere along the way someone should have thought to change the name but they did not.

Names of the game:
Football (soccer) names and Football (word)
The rules of football were codified in England by the Football Association in 1863, and the name association football was coined to distinguish the game from the other forms of football played at the time, specifically rugby football. The term soccer first appeared in the 1880s as a slang abbreviation of Association football, often credited to Charles Wreford-Brown.[18]

Today the sport is known by a number of names throughout the English-speaking world, the most common being football and soccer. The term used depends largely on the need to differentiate the sport from other types of football played in a community. Football is the term used by FIFA, the sport's world governing body, and the International Olympic Committee. For more details of naming throughout the world, please refer to the main articles above.

Well, in my personal situation, being an American, I grew up calling it soccer, although I have no problem whatsoever calling it football =) In fact, I think Americans should start calling it football instead of soccer, it just seems more right.

Soccer, is derived from the word association, of association football.

We do it to annoy you. To annoy the great big, all powerfull British is all that we Yanks live for. We sit around in secret covens thinking up really sneaky ways to bother you. We over-eat and speak in an annoying manner at every chance and then give each other secret handshakes of commendation for being bothersome to the Brits. From what we read on Yahoo it would seem we are very successfull at this business of upsetting you. Maybe voting in our embarrassing jerk of a president was just another way someone decided to ruin your day and I just missed the meeting.

Nobody refers to football as soccer. Soccer is properly referred to as Soccer. The real question is... Why do ignorant brits refer to a bore like soccer with the name of an entertaining sport like football?

You brits need to Americanize and a good way to start is by ditching that communistic socialist bs and going capitalist. Welfare is stealing. Then you should start a football league. Who knows, maybe someday you'll be able to play the US in a World Cup that is actually worth watching and get your asses kicked.

in america, and in a one or two other countries they have a game called football that is nothing like the football you know. so, i suppose, since everyone in thier country was acustomed to saying football for their game, they renamed the football you know to soccer. in short, its to avoid confusion. hope i helped. much luv and stay safe.
