Usually, the nurse has a few suggestions as to the best way to restrain your little one. Sometimes they let you hold her on your lap, putting your arms around her and hugging her whole body to your chest (leaving her head slightly turned so she can breathe!). Of course, you won't be able to do anything about her screaming. Just do it quickly, so that you can get out quickly. Make sure there's a big sticker to award her everytime, even if she screams. Eventually, she'll see that screaming won't stop the process, and she'll learn how to deal with it in her own way. Talk with her several hours or days before getting the test. Offer her something special (not candy or toys) if she can trust you and relax. Let her know that even though the test pinches, if she can just relax, it'll be over quickly, and won't pinch as much. Make the something special a trip to the park, playing a special game with mommy or some other thing of this sort. That way, she'll look forward to the special outing each time she gets the tests. Rewarding good behavior is okay, as long as the reward is time with you, or even a special trip to Gramma or Auntie's house. Eventually, she'll understand that you're in charge, and that she needs to take a deep breath and get it over with as quickly as possible. Hope all turns out well for you and your little one. <*)))><

Distraction. Have her arm preped for the shot and then distract her attention with candy or something else in another direction as the doctor quickly takes the blood. It's usually over with in no time. Also there may be an alternative that only requires a small prick to the finger instead of taking blood from the arm (that's what my doctor did).
Also be very calm about the situation and be sure you get a doctor or nurse with a soothing attitude and voice to keep the child calm.

Sometimes it is better for mom to leave the room and let the nurses handle it. Or if you can be calm and not cause your child to be more nervous try talking but be firm and remind her of the trip to wal-mart on the way home for being good. I didn't like holding mine down because I would feel sorry and give in to her fits and it only took more time. Every child is different and it is always tough on parent at this age.

I did that when I was little, it was the feeling of strange pain and fear that cause me before the needle even comes close to me. The best way is to strap the kid tightly, it is not the most pleasant, but it works.

it really helps when you have them look away.
Have a little gift setting there that they can have as soon as they are finished, IF they behave well while getting the test done.
