I dont think they need to. My motto is that if you dont have the money then it doesn't get bought. No credit cards!!! This goes all year round and even through Christmas. You lose the meaning of Christmas when you get caught up in the money trap of it all. I feel there is nothing wrong with buying people gifts but you dont have to put yourself into debit just to do so.

Personally,I don't think they intend to do it,they just get caught up in the store displays, sales, etc and then don't realize until they add up the receipts what they have done. Nobody needs to put themselves in debt and giving credit where it is due, some don't,but unfortunately I was one of the ones you asked about, not realizing it until I added up the receipts that I had. Is it really worth the grief------no grief here,I am just picturing my Grandchildren opening their gifts and seeing the smiles the gifts bring, while my son in law runs around trying to keep up with the gift wrap flying everywhere and my Daughter running to get more batteries for the digital camera since she took so many. LOL.......that is really what the joy of the overspending means to me. I still celebrate the true meaning of the Season by the celebration of Jesus' birth and attending my Church, but the Grandchildren are worth the worry and "grief" if there is any. Merry Christmas, good question you asked.

Ego! Wait until they get these New Wii and other Video gamers. Then they will buy a Flat Screen to play on and then all you will hear at work is what they paid, or, in most cases, how much new debt they acquired.
Normally what I do is, decide now, what I will budget for next year.
Example: say, I want to buy $300 of toys for Toy-for-Tots and spend $300 on family. That mean I need $600 for next year. $600/12= $50 per month I put in my Christmas can. It works well and that what I spend, no more and no less.

Because material gifts are a quick and easy way to get people to like you and to make them happy.
Its kind of sad but we all do it!! It makes you feel good to see people instantly happy when they receive the present they wanted and usually that means its expensive (ie something they wouldn't have bought for themselves).
Sometimes the best presents though are the cheapest but most thoughtful ones :)
