As everyone knows, Levis were invented so the goldminers in California would have something to wear (there being only so many deer around for making leather). The big pockets are okay for holding gold nuggets, but they don't work so well for gold dust. So, the perfect solution - a little pocket. This pocket was specially lined with rubber (from the Dutch Indies) so the dust would not go through the holes. And this is why we do not find trails of gold dust through the ghost towns in the West, where the miners used to walk.

When Levi Straus made a pair of pants out of heavy canvas that would stand up to the abuse of the California gold fields he included a small pocket for a watch.

Not really sure but...Cowboys used to wear jeans so they must have put one there for something useful. I've tried to search the web but couldn't find a definitive answer. Nowadays I guess it's your choice.
