Depending on what you want to use it for, you do have a few options.
For a high bandwidth service, but has a higher then average ping time, you can check out directway. There service is good for the typical web surfer, but can be lacking for things that send small amounts of data in multiple packets (like some games, and VOIP phone calls).
Another option that exists in many areas is wireless Internet. These are mostly regional based companies run by smaller mom & pop companies however AT&T is also joining the pack with a very limited offering.
Some areas that can't get DSL or Cable, can get ISDN. ISDN will give you about 128K (not super fast but beats dialup). ISDN is an older technology that many phone companies support but because it's need in the industry was replaced by DSL, many overlook it. ISDN is a digital phone line but it doesn't have the distance limitations of DSL and therefore is available in many areas that DSL isn't.

If you are stuck with dialup, there are some things you can to free up CPU usage and RAM.
- Many users are not aware of how much RAM is used by a screensaver full of graphics. Are you using a complex screensaver - it runs in the background and eats memory.
- How many programs do you load at startup? Maybe you should check it out and ensure you are running just what you need.
To do this: cl Start, cl Settings, cl Taskbar and Start Menu.
-cl Start Menu, cl Customize, cl Remove.
-cl the icon for the program you wish to remove
-then cl Remove.
-This will prevent the program from loading at startup, but will not remove the program from the hard disk.
-1.Did you run an error check? Open My Computer,
Right-cl on C:, Select Properties, Tools – Run an Error Check ( checkmark “check all and fix); then run a Defrag
2.Are you using Yahoo Toolbar? Run a full Norton Antispy.
3.From IE, click Tools, Internet Options
delete cookies
delete files (offline files)
clear history (set days to save to 0 if you want)
click o.k., and Restart
3.click Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools – run Disk Cleanup
4.click Start, Run ipconfig renew (type ipconfig space renew)
All these things should be done regularly. The more frequently they are run, the less time they take.
-Note: Games and videos are mostly graphics. Graphics create large files. If this doesn’t help, you should consider getting more memory.

Go out and hurt a deer, but don't kill it! then stick a wi-fi connector inside it, patch it up and make sure it can walk, then wait until that deer gets near a high speed Wi-FI connection!

After checking for spyware/malware, and then determining that your modem has no issues(or switching for a new one), call your ISP and ask them if they are having any problems, to first eliminate that possibility. Then call your phone company, and don't mention anything about your internet/dial-up, but just raise a big stink about your phone service, saying that you frequently hear a lot of static when thalking to people and that at times it is difficult for you to carry on a conversation, and insist that they come out and replace the outside and inside lines and connections.
