the great depression was initiated by the stock market crash in october 1929. The bank failures across the country. The dust bowl in the midwest the following 2 years.
Many things resulted from that. Life changed for everyone. Everything from the type of movies they watched to the fashions to the social morales of the times.
There were also many new agencies created. The CCC Civilian Conservation Corp, (planted trees and built dams) The WPA, Work Projects Assoc. (built local projects but best remembered today for the sidewalks becasue many still have the WPA stamp in them.)
Other agencies were created to oversee bank regulations and depositor interests like the FDIC (Federal Deposit Insurance Corp).

The laissez-faire (government hands off business) economic policies of Hoover and his predecessors like Calvin Coolidge and Warren Harding contributed a lot to it. Wealth was concentrated in the hands of a very small number of people so you had ultra-rich and ultra-poor. FDR's programs like the Civil Conservation Corps did some to help out by giving people jobs, but really the only thing that got the U.S. out of the Great Depression was WWII. - - - Little shanty towns that grew up were called "Hoovervilles". Personally, I think Herbert Hoover gets too much of the blame though.
