bond-stapleton is my last name.

Sorry, I just saw someone give completely false information and had to speak. You can give your baby ANY last name you wish (yes,in America)- even one that nobody related to them has.
My mom was "Jones"
My dad was "Smith"
I am the only member of my family named "Jones-Smith" (my brother is "Smith") and here in CA they could have named me "Miller" if they'd felt like it.
Father's names hold no legal magic. Marriage does not confer any sort of weight to his name. I vote for "Stapleton" if you are unwed and will be the custodial parent- although if you're the last of the "Bond" line, you might consider that in your decision.
