Since in sudden death overtime, the first team to score wins, it makes more sense to get the ball first...since you can't win on defense...unless you get an interception and return it for a touchdown...

Winning teams have elected to kick when their defense is stronger than their offense...

It makes sense to receive the ball first, since the team that scores first wins, but statistically, the teams that kick the ball win about 70% of the time. It's all about field position. A good example was yesterday's Bears-Bucs game. They chose to receive the ball first. What happens....they lose. That was dumb on their part. They stopped the Bears offense the entire second half. They could have kicked off, stopped the Bears on the opening OT drive, gotten the ball in relatively decent field position, and possibly won the game. But, the Bears won the battle of field position and eventually won the game.

Its imperative that you receive the ball in OT. Teams that have the ball first win about 25% of the time on that first possession. Back in the 1962 AFL Championship game, the winner of the toss for the Dallas Texans (who would move to Kansas City and become the Chiefs that offseason) chose to kick. He was spared goat status because the game went to double OT (which is only allowed in championship games) and his team ended up winning on a field goal.

The college OT rules are different and in college it is best to choose to play defense. That's because both teams get possessions (which start at the 25 yard line). The team on defense knows exactly how many points they need to score to win or tie.

In sudden death the team who wins the toss has a right to go on offense or defense. Of course they all pick to receive the ball because the first team to score wins the game.

99% of the time you would choose to recieve the kick in OT. Since you can win as soon as you get into field goal range. The only exception would be if you had a horrible offense and an incrdible defense ( think Bears a couple weeks back). Then you might elect to kick it off and rely on yuor d to hold them deep and maybe cause turnovers.

I've heard of a few instances where that has happened and there is only ONE major disadvantage. If you kick and they score, the game is over! That's why any team captain with a BRAIN will take the ball first in that situation.

it doesn't matter how good your defense is, if you win the toss in OT you receive...kicking is just stupid....the only time you might possibly not choose to kick the ball, is if the wind is really really strong, so you can choose to go with the wind instead of choosing to receive.....could work out on a long game winning fg

well, there may have been a couple of times i don't recall but if my defense was really good and my offense sucked, i would kick it and try to let my defense get an interception or something.
