It should be legal because:

*It's illegal right now and it's not working, more people than ever are smoking weed, and will always smoke weed. Uncle Sam has already LOST the war - just like the war in Iraq and the war on terrorism, Uncle Sam cannot win this war, there will always be weed. There was weed on this earth before every single one of us and there will still be even when we're all gone

*As long as it is illegal, people are supporting drug dealers. Not that every single person who sells and grows weed is a bad person, but some employ violent methods and sell bad crap like coke and crystal meth and these people should not be financially supported. Legalizing it would take the danger away from the user, some dealers are sketchy and will rob you or slack their bag and take advantage of you.

*Alcohol and cigarettes are legal. Cigarette corporations tweak the chemicals in their product to have you deliberately addicted so that you keep buying what they’re selling. How many die every year from cigarettes? I don't know the exact number and I don't feel like looking it up, but I saw it the other day (you can easily find it anywhere online, just go to wikipedia) and it was around 400,000. Alcohol is perhaps even more deadly, first (unlike weed) you can OVERDOSE on it and die from alcohol poisoning. Don't even get me started on DUIs, domestic assaults, alcoholism, cirrhosis of the liver, and all the other harmful effects of alcohol. Note: I don't believe in making cigarettes or alcohol illegal, that would just make their resulting problems even worse.

*You know, people always say, "Would you rather have a bus driver/doctor/pilot smoke a cigarette or weed?" everytime I mention how harmful cigarettes are and I'm tired of it. When I'm high I think more clearly and I'm better at what I do (I run most days but when I run high I have even more stamina and can run longer distances at faster speeds), but if I were to smoke a cig (used to but I freed myself from that slavery) my brain just feels really weird and nicotine DOES have an intoxicating effect, so don't say it doesn't. And you know, how could you trust your life in the hands of somebody who obviously doesn't care about theirs if they smoke cigarettes? I sure wouldn't. Note: People should not come to their jobs high (but what they do on their own time is their prerogative), but in the event that somebody does happen to come to work blazed, I think most stoners would work just as hard, if not even harder, than they would coming to work not high.

*People opposed to marijuana always bring up people driving stoned, yet last month, those in Nevada voted against a referendum that would INCREASE the penalties for stoned driving but at the same time decriminalize and regulate marijuana. How ironic of you anti-marijuana advocates.

*We're clogging our justice system with totally harmless, non-violent marijuana "offenders." Think of all the resources we would be saving by not having to arrest people for weed, by not throwing them all in jail, by not spending all this money on these anti-marijuana propaganda commercials. Our police can actually be doing something useful, such as trying to solve murders and rapes and stuff, you know, ACTUAL CRIMES. Plus, not only would we be saving money, but we'd also be MAKING money too if we regulate it. I'm in favor of having government stores (just like government liqour stores) where you would have to be an adult, and having it taxed there. Obviously if it were no longer illegal the price would go down, but you know, I'd be still willing to pay the more expensive price it is right now, you know how much money our government would make?!

I'm gonna have to step down from my soapbox now, but just one more thing. The first person to answer this question believed that it should be legalized but at the same time said that it would never happen. If everybody in favor of legalization is this pessimistic, then obviosuly we're never going to get anything accomplished. We have to all come together and not be afraid of what happens if we get arested for smoking pot, if we want it legalized. People ended segregation by not being afraid of the Man and standing up for themselves, if it wasn't for Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King, etc., we would still be going to separate schools and having different races ride in the back of the bus. What we need is a Million Stoner March until the draconian laws are undone. So be positive, be safe, be peaceful, have fun, and get high, and **** all the ignorant close-minded weed haters.

I'm not certain that it should be legal, but the method you can use to gain legitimacy for the drug is to go through your lawmakers. If you are interested in changing a state law, contact your state congressmen and explain your point. If you want to be taken seriously, I recommend getting your shiz together with valid arguments. If enough people do this, and if warrants popular support, a bill may be introduced into your state legislature. I find it highly unlikely considering siding with illegal drugs would be political suicide. That's why it would be very important for you to achieve an extremely large support basis in the voter pool.

I have yet to see a person stumble and stager around with its use.
To make it legal one would need support from all who smoke it. I believe that pot is truely big business for the CIA who really are the managers of where and who does the growing of pot and cocaine in S.America, controlling the flow, its distribution and their choice in distributing. The only war that is fought is when someone else has been growing and cutting in on the profits, yes its a real war alright that the out come of their activities brings big business to law firms, hospitals, prison systems both federal and those wonderful private prisons that recieve monies derived from the illegal actions of the aforementioned. I can go on with that part. Pot is not dangerous to any society all people i know are professionals and are doing just fine in all aspects of the American way of life. The issue that pis**** me of is that we who smoke it are considered felons in that we are supporting the smugglers and growers in S.America aka CIA. Now, how would it be illegal if we the people where permitted to grow our own for our personnal consumption. We would not be contributing or supporting the CIA's illegal activites, which supports the exploding prison overpopulation and ever increasing taxes, the medical treatment programs and taxes the people need to fork out to keep these terribly bad people who otherwise contribute their communities are outstanding, hard working people in their communities. Pot does not lead to harder drugs,Alcohol does. Alcohol kills others.Alcohol is the real schorge on society..Just ask senator Ted Kennedy.

Marijuana should be legalized because of it's medicinal purposes, more and more people who suffer from painful diseases such as cancer are turning to Marijuana as a safer and natural alternative to some of the painkillers on the market now. It's not addictive, so patients do not go through withdrawal after it's use as a medical treatment, and the side effects are much easier to deal with then most prescription painkillers (including increased appetite and short-term memory loss). Also as a recreational drug it is a world safer than alcohol, it doesn't cause blind rage in some people, it's not physically addictive, and the effects of drinking too much are much less pleasant to deal with than smoking too much. In fact drinking too much can kill someone, in a myriad of ways, if not through direct alcohol poisoning than through things like drunk driving. I think the best way to encourage the legalization of marijuana is to represent it responsibly for starters, as unfortunately most people who publicly admit to smoking marijuana don't have a lot of credibility. Keep the campaigns for legal marijuana sensible, and most fun of all, get a huge bag of seeds and spread them all around the green spaces of your city. They probably wont grow any bud, but they'll grow (it's not called weed for nothing), and it will send a powerful statement to anyone opposing this plant.

It should be legal. for several reasons:

1. it has benefits to society for recreation just as a vacation is good.

2. It is not addictive as alcahol is.

3. It would save the gov't millions because so many people are in jail for having just a small amout.

4. medical uses have not even begun to be discovered.

Study the process by which it became legal in Holland and consider whether something similar might work in parts of the US. http://cannabisnews.com/index.shtml is a good place to start looking at arguments. Can't see it happening in any but a few states though.

The fact that you just asked such a silly question speaks poorly for your argument... clearly you've already been smoking WAY too much.
