First of all, I think you mean "cult film," not "cult."

Secondly, he's not a racist; he just plays one on t.v. (or on the big screen, as the case may be.)

In any case, I think the appeal of the movie was that it made people think seriously about what we find most offensive in society in why. The main point of the film was to show that those who are easily offended by bad manners, inappropriate language, and overt sexuality are often not offended by actions that truly persecute other humans, and that these people have their moral priorities reversed.

As disgusting as a fat man wrestling a hairy skinny man might be, we shouldn't be nearly as offended by that as by suggestions that someone should be put to death on the basis of their sexual orientation or nationality. It's instructive that the people who were the most offended by the gratuitious nudity in this film didn't seem to be nearly as offended by the bigoted old Cowboy at the rodeo who wanted to change America into a country that hangs homosexuals. What's more disgusting, really: a naked fat guy or a man who proposes murdering fellow humans who are attracted to the "wrong" type of person?

Then again, there are those who didn't "get" that part of the film and who simply thought the over-the-top physical jokes were funny. And of course they were, although not so much for those who are easily offended.

Still others were offended by the movie because they took the cultural and racial slurs that were intended as satire seriously. These people apparently didn't realize that Borat was a character invented by Sasha Baron Cohen to unmask the hidden prejudices in certain areas of American society by emulating them. If they had realized that Cohen himself is a Jew and that his character's attacks on Jews were intended to satirize bigots and racists, not Jews, perhaps they would have "gotten" it.

In short, I see the movie as a sort of social experiment that tested the viewer's system of moral beliefs and his cognitive abilities. And that aspect made the film worthy of praise, and perhaps of cult film status.

It's "toilet humour". Something a 13 year old boy would find hilarious. I saw the movie and it was fun. It's "Dumb and Dumber" type humour. Fun to watch but not to be taken seriously. The court cases against the actor portraying Borat are laughable. It is all in good fun. I mean the "Running of the Jew" in beginning of the film was hilarious as well at the "Annoying the Christian on the cross" at the end of the movie. And remember, the actor who portrays Borat is a devout Jew. I am Christian and it did not offend me at all. There are so many many more serious things that are offencive.

I like the film on the whole, but I loathe the fact that he made mordant remarks on a otherwise truly great nation: Kazahstan. Kazahstan is not in the slightest what Borat showed us. Nor are the Jews. He should really be punished for this!

Funnier as Ali G.
I always thought his Borat character was stupid. I'm no bigot or racist, I just thought it was unbelievable and was making fun at another culture's expense. I can't even believe he got a movie made.

I didn't think Borat was THAT funny. It was just an okay, mediocre movie. I don't see what all the hype is.
