I plan on pumping once I return to work. With my first pregnancy, I had a battery operated breastpump from Target that cost like $30 dollars, it was no good! I thought that it was just using a pump in general, but it would just take like 30 min. to get 3 ounces. I didn't realize then that they had expensive electric pumps. Are these worth it? I would be willing to invest around $100-2 for a good pump if it is, as I will be needing this when I return to work. Thanks!

You pay for what you get. With my third child, I rented one from Public Health and it was awesome. It was an electric one and it was good at helping my milk let down and was able to get alot of ounces at a time.

The battery operted ones are good for the reason that they are portable and smaller. However, I ended up buying one and it was electric but also battery operated. It was pretty good but the one I rented was much better.

Good luck and Merry Christmas!

I pumped after returning to work with both of my kids, and a good one is really worth the money. Think about how much you will save on formula, and spending money on a good breast pump makes sense.

I used the Medela Pump In Style. They are EXPENSIVE brand new, but I was lucky and borrowed mine from friend. However, if you live in an area serviced by Craig's List, I would suggest checking it out. You can buy your own tubing and shields, so it's not like you're reusing anything -- only the actually pump mechanism.

Also, being able to pump both breasts at the same time is key -- a real time saver. I'd also suggest buying a hands-free "bra" for pumping. It makes the whole process a lot more comfortable. (Link below for an example of what I'm talking about.)

The other person's suggestion of renting one is also a good idea. The hospital grade pumps are really great, and you probably will save a lot of money renting rather than buying.

if you want a good breast pump you will need to infest a little bit more but don't worry cause they are worth it and if you plan to have more children you can use it for them also..
You will need a double electric one, they work best and are most like the hospitals.
Madella pump in style is 250-319 depending where you buy it from.
www.lactationcare.com has it for 250.00
Avent isis duo is from300-349 you can get that at www.lactationconnection.com for 314.00. Just make sure you buy the duo, not the single.
They are worth the price. Each pump comes with insulated bags, bottles, ice and everything you need. they both come in a nice carrying case.
Medela has less pieces to clean than the avent. I have the avent which is great it works well and is quiet. I am going to buy the medela now just b/c there are less pieces to clean. I am a RN and it is hard to get breaks or take long ones especially in the er. Well good luck in what ever you do.
Research both pumps. Go for medela if you are worried about price.

I'm an oddball. I like my manual one a thousand times better then my electric. I have an Avent Isis Manual and I just love it. I like being more in control of the pumping. I think I get more out of the breast when I use the manual. The electric one is a Medela Double that I got from WIC. It works OK, but to me takes longer to completely empty. When I pump at work I use my Avent. In the mornings I pump one side while baby gets the other and I use my electric just because I can do that while she is nursing the other side. It takes me about 23-30 minutes to get 5-6 ounces with that one. I definitely recommend you get a more expensive one. I'm normally a pretty cheap person but this is one of those things where even I'd spend the extra $$.

I would check with the hospital you gave birth at. I rented a double pump Medela for $70.00 a month. It was wonderful!! I had a 30 min. lunch break. It only took me 15 minutes to get 8 oz. It helped to have a picture of me nursing my son to look at while pumping which helped with let down. Also, if you decide not to go with the Medela, Avent makes a good hand pump...it took longer, but I did have letdown. I would strongly suggest the Medela though. It will help if you start pumping and freezing your milk so you will have a good supply. Just make sure to date every bag of milk.

Yes it is worth the money. However even the best pumps need to be serviced every 3-6 months.

Look into renting a pump as well, it may be cheaper. The rental pumps are hospital grade and the best on the market.

Also if you are in the US and qualify for WIC you can get a pump for free I believe. There are other organizations as well that provide free pumps.

I easily have the Medela electric powered pump and that's appropriate for me! i do no longer pump often as i'm residing house with my toddler even with the undeniable fact that that's been great for alleviating engorged breasts and that i've got been waiting to easily exhibit adequate for the occasional night out. I easily have a sprint 'basically in case' furnish interior the freezer. I reckon the electrical powered ones are thousands extra powerful than handbook as you are not getting a sore wrist from all that handbook pumping. Medela is a ok time-honored kind so if the entire breastfeeding/pumping element does not paintings out for you they fetch a reliable fee on ebay!

I have used sheap pumps.. and youre right, they're no good. The pump N style is very much like the hospital pump. I bought one 2nd hand and bought new tubes and shields. Since i bought the pump 2nd hand (retails for 240) it only cost me $40. Go ot craigslist.com in your area. You may find one really cheap.
