It is all about marketing and focusing on the demographics that has the most fluid money. In other words, aim for the people that still live at home with their parents and do not have to pay for their living expenses. They are more 'impressionable' to peer pressure and media hype.
Example... Paris Hilton Is there any merit to her celebrity status? Nope
Brittany Spears? Can you make a silk purse out of a sow's ear? Apparently not. Image and reality... Brittany Spears image as a pop artist compared to the real Brittany Spears.
Check the link and see how they market eye candy. One hit wonders are a dime a dozen, as soon as they are in the media, they go for marketing fashion, perfume, anything to try to maintain some form of income before the star fades.

I can't stand musicans with no talent, but there is a difference between musicians with no talent and the creative prossess.Becuase if you belive in a certain kind of music you can make a good song or even album. But you need to know your place. Like if you can't sing don't.If you don't know the first thing about playing an insturment don't start a band, But pick up an instrument as soon as you can.The only way we can get better music back in the world is to teach the bacisc to the kids while their young. So then when they become musicans they will have talent and ....well you understand what i am saying.
Now on the 2nd part of the Q. Bands or Artist that use image to make money off the public,It's ok to a certain extent. But if that all you have is looks then it wont really work. But if you have talent then it's okay to use your body to help in sales...well kindof.
Some one that is a good example. of a succses full band that used gimmicks to help their image along with their heart pounding music. Slipknot.
A pop girl that has the image talent combo is .. Christin agqularia(sp)That girl can sing. But that is my take on it hope fully others understand what i am talking about.

Dispicable. The most harm is done to musicians and real vocalists who spend most of their lives training, practicing and generally taking it seriously, and year after year we see our "Brittany Spears" and the like winning for best vocal performance. It discourages young people who are studying music in school. It's like, if you don't really have to know anything about music to be a musician, why learn? I can spend the money I would've used on voice lessons on some new breasts! I hate it. It's a growing trend and in less than a decade, the majority of singers won't even be able to identify a major scale.

What do i think about them? Other than the fact that they seem to be taking over the airwaves and the industry in general? Well , i COULD let it bother me since i've been a musician for years and DO have talent but not "the look" , but it doesn't bother me - i just keep on doing what i do anyway.

Nobody makes "the public" buy the music. if someone is stupid enough to buy a song because the singer is good looking, it's their money. People who appreciate music take the trouble to look deeper than MTV or whatever. From your question, i'd say you're on the right track.

Musicians have talent. It's the dumb plastic copy "Singers" like britney spears and such that don't have talent.
Another example would be that group made by P Diddy in the show Making the band.. They really just suck and try to be all great.
And yes they keep using their bodies to gain followers. it's such a stupid thing, cause they sing like crap. Give me a sexy singer with a good voice and i'll pay for her music. Else, sexy with no talent, i give c*ap about her .

Can't stand them!
I had a hard time keeping an open mind to the 80s heavy metal hair bands.
