I don’ t mean to seem unsympathetic but why do people feel the need to climb mountains etc and put their lives at risk , risk the life of rescuers; give their loved ones grief and cause loss of manpower and money to say that I conquered a mountain or the mountain conquered me?

to push the envelope to death? Is that the reward of risking your life to say you could? when you don't have to ; not like the old days to find food, lodging etc; fun doesn't equal your death does it?

I totally agree with you, i saw on the news this morning that they found the body of one of the guys and all i can think is why? Why do they risk their lives just to climb a mountain? They know the risks involved when they do it. I'm sorry i wouldn't risk my life to climb a mountain.

Each climber has their own reasons for doing it.Some want to challenge themselves. You don't know how far you can go(physically and mentally) until you push yourself to your limit.
Some are adrenalin junkies. They don't feel alive until they get that rush from putting themselves in danger.
Some want the bragging rights.MAJOR EGO BOOST!
Some want to try and win the battle against nature.Man's eternal fight to control nature.
While others really shouldn't do it because their ill-prepared and inexperienced.
The tragedy that's happening on that mountain shows us that even the experienced and well-prepared can run into problems.
My heart goes out to the family of those men. They were doing what they loved and that's what really matters.
Yes,I've climbed a bit but nothing compared to that!

Some people just love being up high. A sort of peace. Others
are afraid of height. I can't see myself jumping out of a plane. It may be quite acception and I cringe when I hear of it happening but it only takes once for a chute not to open and the imergency chute to get tangled and you can't take it back.

I don't actually climb, but I do sub-aqua dive. It is the same kind of thing. Why does anybody do anything?

You may be content to sit at home watching the television, but some of us want a challenge in our lives. We want to test ourselves, and find our limits. We want to see things that are not hum drum.

Good question! Why would a family man participate in an extreme sport?

For many, they have a death wish but aren't strong enough or have religious beliefs & it stops them, so they try to climb but hope to die, without purposely causing their own demise.

Men see something before them that is hard or impossible to do and can't help but to do it, it's in our nature.
