sweetie the germans had all the power. under hitler's regime, the wished to exterminate all the jews from europe due to an anti-semitism dating back all the way to the time of christ. the antisemitism surged due to the outcome of wwi which had blamed germans for starting the war and demanded they pay reparations and restricted them from forming aunchslauss or alliance with austria

hitler was outraged and he formed the nazi party and he blamed to jews for the inflation and poverty in germany (a result of having to pay reparations)
upon doing so the jews became to be deprived of their businesses and homes (the nuremburg laws) and were relocated to ghettos which is what you saw in the movie.

meanwhile the world was following a policy of appeasement allowing hitler to take czechoslavakia as long as he left poland alone
breat britain and france had vowed to help neutral poland if it was attacked. but hitler attacked poland anyway
and the war was incited.

while the war is being fought, hitler is relocating jews from the ghettos to the death camps and concentration camps. not until the end of the war did the world come to know of this because the camps were so well disguised.
it was terrible hence the term holocaust which means "burning"
im sure you have heard of auschwitz--the worst concentration camp..it is said that at least 10,000 people were exterminated there EACH DAY.....and the corpses were burned in a huge bonfire so to speak.

what the nazi party carried out was a genocide, the worst which the world had ever seen taking the lives of a total of 6 million jews and five million others including homosexuals, gypsies metally handicapped and political opponents. so a total of eleven million people burned alive...

the nuremberg trials are today remembered as the first trials held to execute those charged with crimes against humanity (the nazi party ss officers.)

there you have it.
