Which is better - a desktop PC or a laptop? For example which is more prone to faults and breaking down. Which is better value for money in general? Does the convenience of being able to carry around a laptop outweigh its disadvantages?
Also - would it be cheaper to buy a PC before or after Christmas?

desktops are generally like more due to the relative ease in upgrading them and they are comparatively cheaper to fix then things go wrong. Also, desktops are cheaper than equivalent laptops in specs and generally more powerful in terms of graphics, memory and processing. Despite this, desktops aren’t mobile.

Laptops are more expensive to replace, repair and upgrade since individual parts are not compatible across manufacturers.

It depends on what use you want from your pc. If it will be stationary, then go for a desktop!!

Pc's are better for your money. I personally have both. Laptops are great tho, totally portable.
1. I've had mine for almost 1 year. I can almost only stay on my laptop for 1 hour. Last year i could stay on for 2 hours wihtout it being charged. a 50% decrease in battery life in 1 year
2. If you get some kind of adware or spyware, it seams to me that it is harder to get it off of your computer.
3. You can only upgrade your memorie so far, and parts for your laptop will cost twice as much as it does for your PC.

But this all depends on your needs. I'd rather pay 100% more for a laptop than a PC beacuse of it's proabillity. If you stay at home all the time and have no need to get on the computer a lot. then go for the PC.

And Dells Pc's are at a great price right now around christmas.

In general terms a desktop machine will be cheaper than a laptop for comparable hardware specifications. Also, desktops are easier to upgrade as new and more advanced technology becomes available. Obviously, the laptop is portable but if this is not a deciding factor then I'd opt for a desktop machine.

Being able to move around with a lap top is great however can give you back problems. Also the way you sit and work with a lap top can affect your back.

Aside from that I find that the battery runs down quickly and it's much slower.

If you can access files remotely from other computers as in through Citrix or VPN and can hot desk at PC terminals for work then I would just have a PC for home. If not then I'd buy a lap top so I could use it for work.

I'd buy after Christmas

It all depends on your needs. If you do not need your a laptop then a desktop is a better option because you can get more memory, a better display adapter, larger harddrive, etc, for less or the same price as a laptop. Whereas a laptop is a better option if you need to work on it at different locations.

It all depends on your needs.
A laptop is nice if you want to have a pc always with you.
But a desktop is better almost always:

- it's cheeper
- easier to upgrade
- with the same money you can buy much better performance desktop pc

If it's quality/price you are looking for choose a desktop pc

it would be cheaper to buy a computer before Christmas because of the sales. If you don't get a sale item then after christmas would be best because before christmas they raise the base prices. and a disadvantage to a laptop is that once it craps out on you then you can't fix it, you have to buy a whole new one.

I find that the biggest advantage to a laptop is less clutter. It is portable but I rarely use it that way. I have had mine for over 2 years with no hardware problems.
