q tips but be careful. You can hurt the eardrum if you shove it in too far. They sell ear wash kits at the drug store if they get really bad.

In the doctors office we use warm water and peroxide we use a large syringe and strong force of fluid usually breaks the wax loose. If there is large amounts and it is difficult to loosen we will put several drops of 1/2 strength peroxide in the ear and have the patient lay with ear tilted to allow it to soak in the ear. Q tips although are good to get the wax out of the outer canal sometimes cause the wax to be pushed to the eardrum. there is a product over the counter called debrom that works really well but you need to follow that with a flushing of warm water with a bulb type syringe also over the counter.

Ditto the person re what they do in drs office. I had that done, could hear again! I pour peroxide in my ears once a month to get rid of excess wax (age-related I think!) and just let it fizz there for a minute or so, then rinse it with warm water. Do it in the shower to avoid getting peroxide all over, and the nasty wax.

Wax is there for health reasons unless you have a buildup that blocks your inner ear. Warm water helps to loosen ear wax and not throw your equilibrium off as opposed to using cold water.
Or ear wax drops from you local drug store will do. (Debrox)

I have no clue what they are called, but health stores sell them.

They are 18 inch hollow "candles" that you stick in your ears. You lay on your side, head flat, stick on of these candles in your ear and light the end. As the candle burns, it sucks all the wax out of your head.

This may sound weird, but it works. You have no idea how much stuff this will suck out of your head. Have someone help you do this, get a paper plate, cut a hole in it - and put the candle through it before you light it - this will help reduce any dripping.
