Trying to format my main drive(c:) through command prompt. Gives the following error: Format cannot run because the volume is in use by another process.Format may run if this volume is dismounted first.ALL OPEN HANDLES TO THIS VOLUME WOULD THEN BE INVALID.Would you like to force a dismount to this volume(y/n). I choose y and it gives me the following message:Cannot lock the drive. The volume is still in use.
Can anyone help me as I’m trying to install an older version of xp onto my drive than I currently have.(One without sp2 which I will then download). Thanks Noel.

Are you trying to format from within Windows?? You can't do that. Boot to a floppy disk and format from there.

You can't format your c:/ drive while you are using it, since that will delete the operating system that is currently loaded. You need to boot to some kind of alternate operating system first.

Just boot from the Windows XP CD. You can format the hard drive as part of the installation process.
