Where are some good places to eat or drink in San Francisco where a female on her own won't get bothered or hassled? I'm here staying with a friend and would like to go out into the city during the day while he's at work, and unfortunately as he's male he's not much use when it comes to answering this question!

Also can you recommend some stores that sell off-beat things but that aren't too expensive?

Thanks!

Explore Hayes Valley, [Hayes street from Frankin to Octavia] lots of great shopping, good restaurants, and there is a fun little gay pub, Marlena's where the people are friendly and you won't have to worry about men hitting on you. Right now they are decorrated for christmas with over 200 santas!

Noe Valley [24the between Castro and Church] is also nice, more shopping less food and drink though Bliss is nice it is a singles scene bar.

Avoid pier 39, fisherman's wharf and union square. Crowded and just too touristy.

Gaspare’s Pizza and Italian eating place 5546 Geary @ twentieth street. that's the style of place that reminds east coast individuals of their pizza places, plastic grapes hold close from the ceiling, That’s Amore on the juke container, fabulous calzone and pizza, great pasta with your determination of classic sauces. an area well-liked with families and couples alike. alongside the comparable lines Georgios on Clement at 2d. They make their very own sausage and the workers is friendly. whilst i'm in North sea coast and choose a slice I regularly hit Golden Boy on green at Columbus. You should be completely safe on Castro street (gay "mecca"), and there are also plenty of unique shops and restaurants there. Honestly, you'd probably be "safe" in most parts of the city. You'll find unique shops on haight street also.
