Rice cereal is the least likely to cause an allergic reaction. Mixed cereals contain wheat, which babies can be allergic to. Usually rice cereal is used to teach babies how to use the spoon, swallow, etc. because it's the most gentle. Also, once you introduce a new food, it's best to wait about five days to be sure that there's not an allergy to that food.

You want to start out with something that is easy to digest like rice and only one thing at a time so if the child has an allergic reaction you will know what caused it. You should only give one new thing a week because it sometimes takes a little while to see how the child will react to the new food.

Ask the pediatrician. Mine told me to give the baby mashed bananas as a first food. Each one has a different idea. But grains cause a lot of allergic problems, so it is best to introduce them one at a time, so the baby can get used to it.

SIngle grain is better because if the baby is allergic to somethign you can narrow it down sooner and it isn't as hard on their little system. More than one grain at a time can cause constipation and or upset tummies .

Because you want to make sure baby isn't allergic to what your feeding him/her. If you start with a complex food and baby has reaction, then you won't know exactly what's causing the problem.
